Marquee Timber Floors have a range of different coatings and sheen finishes that we use to provide you with a truely unique and customised job. Our coatings are all high quality and when cared for correctly can last up to 20 years. Some coatings have different sheen levels available, while others are designed to be their own unique finish. The different sheen levels are a personal choice and each have their own pros and cons.
Coatings
Polyurethane
Polyurethane is a popular choice for our timber flooring customers because it provides a tough, protective coating designed to withstand the demands of every day life.
Available in all sheen levels (gloss, semi-gloss, satin, low-sheen and matte), polyurethane allows you to choose the look that best suits your home and lifestyle. With commercial grade strength, is our most affordable option. It does have stronger fumes and has slower drying times in winter which needs to be taken into consideration when choosing your coating. We recommend polyurethane for budget conscious customers and darker timbers. Ask Chris about our budget friendly, Eco-Lux Polyurethane option!
Water-based
Our water-based coating is a popular choice for customers wanting a durable, low-odour floor finish with a clean, natural appearance. Compared with traditional solvent-based finishes, water-based coatings generally have lower odour and less colour change over time.
It is also a commercial grade strength and has reliable drying times which makes it an excellent option for modern homes where a fresh, natural look is preferred.
Water-based coatings are available in gloss, semi-gloss, matte, ultra-matte and invisible. We recommend water-based coatings for lighter timbers and customers with allergies.
Hardwax Oil
Hardwax oil is a premium timber floor finish that combines natural-looking oils with protective waxes to enhance the character and beauty of your timber flooring.
Rather than creating a thin layer over the top of the surface, hardwax oil soaks into the timber and forms a protective surface that maintains the natural texture and feel of the wood. As architects favourite finish, it comes in a wide range of colours, has low fumes and provides a natural, authentic and beautifully understated finish.
Hardwax oil is recommended for lower traffic homes and comes in gloss, satin, silk, matte and ultra-raw sheen levels.
Penetrating Oil
Penetrating oil is designed to soak into the timber, enhancing the natural colour, grain and character of the wood rather than creating a film on the surface. It gives timber floors a warm, rich appearance and beautiful leather feel and finish. Due to the way the oil works, maintenance coats are required every 6 months to maintain a commercial strength. It is an excellent choice for customers who want to showcase the authentic character of the timber. The result is a soft, matte finish that showcases the beauty and texture of the floor.
Sports Oil
Sports oil is a specialised penetrating oil finish designed for timber sports floors and high use commercial environments. It enhances the natural character of timber while providing a durable, practical finish designed to withstand the demands of regular activity and foot traffic. Ideal for sports centres, gyms, schools, community facilities and commercial spaces, sports oil is an affordable, non-slip, gloss finish. As an oil, drying times can be slower which is something to consider when choosing your coating.
Sports Water-based Coating
Sports water-based coating is a specialist finish designed timber sports floors and demanding commercial environments. It provides a durable protective surface while maintaining the natural appearance and character of timber. It comes in a variety of sheen levels with reliable drying times making it a great choice for sports centres, schools, gyms and community centres where floors need to be returned to use quickly.

Floor sanding coatings come in a variety of sheen levels. These include gloss, semi-gloss, satin, low sheen, matte and ultra-matte. Some brands have different names so you may see labels such as silk, invisible, raw, ultra-raw etc. We have listed just a few of the floor sanding sheen levels below. Gloss
A striking finish with a beautiful polished appearance.

Satin
A beautiful balance between natural and polished.
It has a soft, understated sheen that enhances the natural character and grain of your timber without creating a highly reflective surface. It provides a smooth, elegant finish with a subtle lustre, making the timber floors look warm, contemporary and refined. It is also a practical choice for busy homes as its lower level of reflection helps to disguise minor marks, dust and everyday wear.
Matte
Natural, understated and beautifully authentic.
Matte provides a very low-sheen finish that allows the natural character, colour and grain of your timber floor to shine without a noticeable reflective surface. It creates a soft, contemporary appearance while maintaining the warmth and authenticity of natural timber. With minimal light reflection, a matte finish is an excellent choice for modern interiors and busy homes where you want a relaxed, natural look rather than a polished appearance. Its subtle finish can also help minimise the visibility of everyday marks and surface imperfections.
Ultra-Matte
The natural look of raw timber, with the protection of a professional finish.
With its ultra-matte appearance, this premium finish allows the natural colour, texture and character of the timber to remain the focus. Unlike traditional finishes that can add a noticeable sheen or deepen the colour of the timber, this sheen is designed to create a bare-timber look with virtually no visible change to the appearance of the floor.
